Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to SCO Ahead of 2026 Chairmanship, Dar Meets SCO Secretary-General

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing the objectives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a high-level meeting with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev in Islamabad on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the two sides held a comprehensive exchange of views on the SCO’s priorities and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation among member states in key sectors, including economic collaboration, regional transport networks and connectivity.

They also reviewed the evolving regional and international situation, underlining the importance of enhanced multilateral cooperation to promote peace, stability and sustainable development across the SCO region.

The SCO Secretary-General commended Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace, stability and cooperation, acknowledging the country’s active engagement within the organization.

Nurlan Yermekbayev also shared his proposals for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the SCO and briefed the Deputy Prime Minister on preparations for the upcoming SCO Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) Meeting, scheduled to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s continued support for the SCO, Senator Ishaq Dar expressed the country’s readiness to work closely with all member states in the lead-up to Pakistan assuming the Chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State (CHS) in September 2026.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the successful hosting of the SCO Heads of State Summit in 2027, describing it as an opportunity to further strengthen regional cooperation, economic integration and connectivity among SCO member countries.

The meeting reflected Pakistan’s growing diplomatic engagement within the SCO framework and underscored its determination to play an active role in promoting regional peace, economic cooperation and collective prosperity across Eurasia.
