ISLAMABAD, Mar 19 – Pakistan took a major step into the digital future as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the signing of 5G license agreements with telecom operators Jazz, Zong, and Ufone. The licenses, awarded after a transparent auction process, officially grant spectrum rights to the companies, enabling nationwide deployment of 5G services.
Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister said the 5G rollout marks a milestone for Pakistan, benefiting key sectors including agriculture, technology, and industry. He appreciated the efforts of Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar for clearing legal hurdles during the auction process and highlighted previous transparent transactions, such as the divestment of Pakistan International Airlines.
The prime minister congratulated telecom companies, with Jazz securing the largest share of the spectrum, and emphasized the importance of expanding 5G to urban and rural areas to empower youth through modern technological advancements.
Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja said 480 MHz spectrum has been added, compared to 274 MHz previously, which will significantly improve internet speeds. PTA Chairman Hafeez ur Rehman noted that Pakistan now leads the region in spectrum capacity, marking a historic moment for the country’s digital landscape.
