**ISTANBUL, August 31, 2026:** Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia held the inaugural meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee established under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, marking the first formal institutional step toward implementing the landmark trilateral defence accord.
Pakistan was represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. They joined their Turkish and Saudi counterparts in Istanbul for discussions focused on strengthening strategic, political and defence cooperation.
The committee brings together senior political, defence and military leadership from the three countries, providing a permanent mechanism for consultations and coordination under the Makkah Agreement.
The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was signed in Makkah on August 7 by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. The agreement seeks to strengthen collective security and defence cooperation while promoting peace, stability and security in the region and beyond.
A key provision of the agreement states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three. Pakistan has emphasised that the agreement is defensive in nature, is not directed against any country and is intended to strengthen collective deterrence and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the three states.
The Istanbul meeting represents a significant transition from the political understanding reached in Makkah to a structured mechanism for implementing its commitments. The participation of foreign ministers, defence ministers and senior military leadership provides the committee with both political and military dimensions.
For Pakistan, the meeting further strengthens its strategic relations with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, while reinforcing Islamabad’s position that enhanced defence cooperation should contribute to regional peace and stability rather than confrontation.
The trilateral framework also comes at a time of heightened security tensions across the Middle East and wider Gulf region. The three countries have indicated that their cooperation is intended to strengthen deterrence, safeguard national sovereignty and support regional stability.
The establishment of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee could therefore become an important platform for regular strategic consultations, joint security assessments and closer defence coordination among Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia.
The agreement does not replace the countries’ existing bilateral or multilateral commitments. Pakistani officials have also indicated that the framework could remain open to other regional countries that share its principles and objectives.
The presence of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir alongside Pakistan’s foreign and defence ministers at the inaugural meeting highlights the importance Islamabad attaches to integrating political, diplomatic and military perspectives within the new framework.
The Istanbul meeting marks a new phase in Pakistan-Türkiye-Saudi Arabia strategic cooperation. Its long-term significance will depend on how effectively the three countries translate the Makkah commitments into practical cooperation while maintaining their stated emphasis on defence, deterrence, sovereignty, diplomacy and regional stabilit.
