Gilani Calls for National Consensus on Population Planning, Youth Development

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has called for a national consensus on population planning, stressing that effective family planning and investment in youth are essential for Pakistan’s sustainable development and future prosperity.

Speaking at a World Population Day 2026 ceremony, Gilani said Pakistan’s rapidly growing population presents both challenges and opportunities. He noted that more than 65 percent of the country’s population is under the age of 30, describing the country’s youth as a valuable demographic asset that can drive economic growth if provided with quality education, healthcare, and skills development.

The Chairman Senate warned that continued population growth is increasing pressure on healthcare, education, employment, water resources, and the environment. He emphasized that population planning should be integrated into Pakistan’s broader economic and development agenda, describing family planning as vital for improving maternal and child health, reducing poverty, and achieving sustainable development.

Gilani reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting legislation, policy initiatives, and parliamentary oversight to promote responsible population planning. He also urged political and religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the media to help raise public awareness and address misconceptions surrounding family planning.

Commending the efforts of the Ministry of National Health Services, provincial governments, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and development partners, Gilani expressed confidence that coordinated national efforts can transform Pakistan’s growing population into a powerful force for inclusive growth and national prosperity.
