Pakistan Navy Commissions First HANGOR-Class Submarine in China

Rawalpindi, 30 April 2026:
The commissioning ceremony of the first HANGOR-Class submarine, PNS/M HANGOR, was held in Sanya, China. Asif Ali Zardari attended as Chief Guest, while Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, was also present.

President Zardari termed the induction a historic milestone in Pakistan Navy’s modernization, reaffirming Pakistan’s capability to defend its sovereignty, maritime interests, and economic lifelines.

The Naval Chief emphasized that evolving threats to global trade and energy security require technologically advanced naval forces. He stated that HANGOR-Class submarines, equipped with advanced weapons, sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion, will play a key role in regional stability and safeguarding Sea Lines of Communication in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.

He highlighted the legacy of HANGOR, recalling its role in 1971 as the first submarine since World War II to sink a warship, and expressed confidence that PNS/M HANGOR will carry forward this legacy.

The event marks another chapter in Pakistan-China defence cooperation and was attended by senior officials from Pakistan Navy and PLA Navy. The Prime Minister, COAS, and CDF congratulated the nation and Pakistan Navy on this achievement.
