Pakistan Eyes Digital Economic Boom as PM Shehbaz Sharif Reviews Major IT Expansion and 5G Progress

Islamabad — May 11, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review Pakistan’s Information Technology and Telecommunications sector, reaffirming the government’s commitment to accelerating digital transformation and increasing IT exports. The Prime Minister stated that the promotion of the IT sector and growth in technology exports remain among the government’s top priorities. He added that Pakistan’s youth possess immense talent in technology and innovation, which must be fully utilized to strengthen the national economy.

Officials briefed the meeting that household internet connections across Pakistan have increased significantly from 1.9 million in 2024 to 5.10 million in 2026, reflecting rapid digital expansion and internet adoption nationwide. The government was also informed that Pakistan’s IT exports are expected to reach between $4.5 billion and $4.6 billion during the current fiscal year, indicating continued momentum in the country’s technology sector.

One of the key developments discussed during the meeting was Pakistan’s recent 5G spectrum auction, which officials described as the world’s largest telecom auction since 2016. The auction generated approximately $509 million in revenue and is expected to pave the way for faster internet services, smart technologies, digital banking, e-commerce, telemedicine, and modern industrial growth.

The meeting also reviewed Pakistan’s growing focus on Artificial Intelligence. Officials informed the Prime Minister that “Indus AI Week,” held in February 2026, featured events in 30 cities across the country and attracted more than 100 international delegates. A total of 88 AI-related panels and initiatives were launched during the program, highlighting Pakistan’s ambition to become an active player in the global AI landscape.

Officials further shared that government schools and health units in Islamabad have now been connected through fiber internet infrastructure, while the project to establish free public internet hotspots in the capital has entered its final phase. Modern E-learning Pods are also being installed at Saidpur Model Village and Fatima Jinnah Park to promote digital learning opportunities for the public.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to accelerate work on establishing “Asaan Khidmat Centers” in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir and instructed officials to coordinate with provincial governments to expand such digital facilities across the country. He also emphasized reducing the digital divide between urban and rural areas through stronger cooperation at provincial and district levels.

The meeting was attended by senior federal ministers including Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and Bilal Azhar Kayani.
