“Hormuz Tensions Rise, Ceasefire Questioned as Islamabad Races to Contain Crisis”
Story by Irfan Tariq, Islamabad
The situation took a sharp turn in the Strait of Hormuz after a US naval operation seized an Iranian vessel, prompting a strong and immediate reaction from Tehran, which labeled the move a violation of the ceasefire and raised serious concerns over the future of ongoing negotiations.
Diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran, currently being mediated in Islamabad, had already faced difficulties in reaching any concrete agreement. The latest incident has further complicated the process, pushing talks into a fragile phase marked by mistrust and rising tensions, as both sides exchange accusations over violations and intent.

In response to the escalating crisis, Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic engagement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened urgent high-level meetings and established direct contact with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, urging restraint and continuity in dialogue. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been actively coordinating with key international stakeholders to maintain momentum in the peace process.
At the same time, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry held important discussions with US Ambassador Donald Blome in Islamabad, focusing on security arrangements and diplomatic coordination amid heightened tensions. Pakistan has also reached out to the European Union leadership in an effort to gather international backing for de-escalation and continued negotiations.
Islamabad has remained under tight security throughout these developments, with controlled access to key areas and visible law enforcement presence, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the diplomatic activity underway rather than any domestic unrest.
Although the negotiations have not formally collapsed, they now stand at a critical juncture. With trust between Washington and Tehran under strain, the coming days will be decisive in determining whether dialogue can be revived or whether the region edges closer to further escalation. Pakistan continues to position itself as a key mediator, working to keep both sides engaged and prevent a broader crisis from unfolding.
