High-Stakes Diplomacy in Islamabad: US Delegation Delayed, Iran Yet to Confirm as Ceasefire Deadline Nears

Islamabad (News Desk): As the ceasefire deadline approaches, uncertainty continues to surround the much-anticipated talks in Islamabad, with both the United States and Iran yet to finalize their participation.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar confirmed that Pakistan remains in continuous contact with the Iranian side to secure confirmation of its delegation. He reiterated that Pakistan, acting as a mediator, is making sincere and sustained efforts to advance dialogue before the ceasefire expires at 4:50 AM PST on April 22.

Iran’s Position Still Unclear

According to the latest developments, Iran has not yet made a final decision on whether to attend the Islamabad talks. Diplomatic sources indicate that Tehran is still “considering” participation, while earlier signals suggested reluctance amid rising tensions with Washington.

Iran has also raised strong objections over recent US actions, including maritime incidents, which it views as violations of the ceasefire—further complicating the decision to join negotiations.

US Delegation Faces Delay

On the other side, the US delegation—expected to be led by Vice President JD Vance—has not yet departed for Islamabad. Reports suggest the trip has been delayed due to additional policy-level consultations in Washington, reflecting the seriousness of the situation and unresolved strategic questions.

Officials had earlier indicated readiness for talks, but the delay underscores ongoing internal deliberations as the ceasefire window narrows.

Critical Hours Ahead

With only hours remaining before the ceasefire expires, Pakistan’s mediation efforts have entered a निर्णायक phase. Analysts warn that the absence of either delegation could derail the diplomatic process and risk renewed escalation.

Despite the uncertainty, Islamabad continues to push for engagement, maintaining backchannel contacts with both sides in a last-minute effort to bring them to the negotiating table.

The coming hours are being seen as decisive—not only for the fate of the talks but for broader regional stability.
