Strategic Cooperation Opens a New Chapter in Pakistan’s Clean Energy Transition

ISLAMABAD: In a significant step toward sustainable development and climate resilience, Pakistan and Denmark have formalized a new phase of cooperation in the energy sector by signing a Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement underscores both countries’ shared commitment to accelerating Pakistan’s transition toward a cleaner, greener and more efficient energy future.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Fakhr-e-Alam, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Energy (Power Division), and H.E. Maja Derrous Mortensen, Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, who later held high-level discussions with the Danish Ambassador on expanding bilateral cooperation in renewable energy, energy efficiency and long-term power sector reforms.

The new agreement builds upon the success of the Danish Energy Transition Initiative (DETI), launched in 2021. Through this government-to-government partnership, Denmark will continue sharing its internationally recognized expertise in clean energy technologies, power system planning and green innovation with Pakistan’s energy institutions.

The cooperation focuses on three strategic priorities: developing long-term energy planning, integrating a greater share of renewable energy into Pakistan’s national grid, and improving industrial energy efficiency to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing economic competitiveness.

A Partnership Beyond Energy

For Pakistan, this partnership is more than a technical agreement. It represents a strategic investment in the country’s economic future. Pakistan continues to face rising electricity demand, dependence on imported fuels and increasing vulnerability to climate change. Strengthening renewable energy and improving energy efficiency are therefore essential for ensuring long-term energy security and sustainable economic growth.

Denmark brings decades of global leadership in wind energy, green technology, smart electricity grids and low-carbon industrial development. By leveraging Danish expertise, Pakistan can modernize its energy infrastructure, reduce transmission losses, attract green investment and gradually decrease reliance on expensive fossil fuels.

Climate Diplomacy in Action

The agreement also reflects the growing importance of climate diplomacy. As countries worldwide intensify efforts to meet international climate commitments, partnerships such as the Pakistan-Denmark SSC demonstrate how knowledge-sharing and technological cooperation can deliver practical solutions to global environmental challenges.

The collaboration supports Pakistan’s broader vision of expanding renewable energy generation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building a more resilient power sector capable of supporting sustainable industrial development.
