Field Marshal Asim Munir Reaches Tehran as Pakistan Mediates Iran–US Peace Dialogue Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, as part of intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States. The visit comes under a broader mediation initiative in which Pakistan is facilitating the exchange of proposals between both sides to prevent further escalation and explore a possible framework for dialogue.

Upon arrival, he was received by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, marking a coordinated diplomatic engagement at a sensitive moment in regional affairs.

Iran has reportedly put forward proposals calling for an immediate ceasefire, recognition of its right to maintain a peaceful nuclear program, gradual lifting of economic sanctions, and the unfreezing of its overseas assets. Tehran has also demanded strong security guarantees to prevent future military strikes and prefers a phased negotiation process rather than a single comprehensive deal. Iran has shown openness to international dialogue and verification in principle, but insists that its sovereignty over nuclear enrichment must remain intact.

The United States, on the other hand, has proposed strict limits on Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities with international monitoring and verification mechanisms. Washington has also called for a reduction in missile-related and regional military activity, along with assurances for the security of its allies in the region. The US position includes step-by-step sanctions relief tied directly to compliance and a structured ceasefire framework as an initial step toward broader negotiations.

Diplomatic sources suggest that some points from both sides are being considered for possible acceptance as a middle path. Iran has shown conditional openness to enhanced international inspections and a phased dialogue process, provided its nuclear rights are not fully restricted. The United States has indicated flexibility on gradual sanctions relief and a temporary ceasefire framework if verifiable limits are placed on sensitive nuclear activities. However, major differences still remain on uranium enrichment levels, long-term sanctions removal, and security guarantees.

Pakistan’s role in the process is being described as that of a neutral facilitator, carrying messages between Tehran and Washington and attempting to narrow gaps through incremental proposals. The current focus is on building a temporary ceasefire understanding and establishing a structured negotiation roadmap that both sides can accept without immediate political pressure.

While no final agreement has been reached, the atmosphere in diplomatic circles is described as cautiously hopeful. Officials involved in the process believe that continued engagement through mediation channels could gradually move both sides toward a workable compromise and reduce regional tensions in the coming stages.
