Pakistan Pitches New Investment Push as U.S. Trade Talks Gain Momentum

  1. Islamabad — August 10, 2026 |

Pakistan is stepping up efforts to deepen economic ties with the United States, with trade, investment, energy and digital technology emerging as key areas of cooperation following a high-level meeting between Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker in Islamabad.

The meeting comes as Pakistan seeks to attract greater foreign investment, expand exports and diversify its financing sources while advancing discussions with the United States on a reciprocal trade framework.

Senator Aurangzeb briefed the U.S. diplomat on his recent Washington visit and meetings with senior U.S. economic and financial institutions, including the U.S. Treasury, IMF, U.S. International Development Finance Corporation and Export-Import Bank.

A major focus was Pakistan’s engagement with the U.S. Trade Representative on the reciprocal trade framework, with Islamabad highlighting progress and seeking greater market access, stronger export opportunities and increased two-way trade.

The Finance Minister also pushed for greater participation by U.S. companies and financial institutions in Pakistan, particularly through investment-ready projects supported by appropriate financing structures.

Ports and logistics, energy, telecommunications, digital technology and artificial intelligence were identified as sectors offering significant potential for future cooperation.

For Pakistan, the discussions are particularly important as Islamabad works to strengthen foreign exchange reserves, improve its sovereign credit profile and secure longer-term financing while maintaining fiscal discipline and economic stability.

The meeting also addressed the impact of the recent regional conflict and higher energy prices. Pakistan briefed the U.S. side on measures being taken to manage economic pressures, including the introduction of a daily petroleum price revision mechanism aimed at aligning domestic prices more closely with international markets.

Ms. Baker appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to maintain economic stability under challenging circumstances and reaffirmed U.S. support for Pakistan’s economic reform agenda.

She also expressed continued U.S. interest in expanding bilateral trade and investment, particularly through greater participation by American companies in strategic sectors of Pakistan’s economy.

The broader message from Islamabad is clear: Pakistan wants to move beyond traditional financial support toward a deeper economic partnership built around trade, private investment, technology and commercially viable projects.
