Pakistan-China Friendship — A Timeless Bond of Trust, History and Shared Destiny

In the history of international relations, many alliances are shaped by temporary interests and changing political realities. Yet some relationships rise above circumstances and become symbols of trust, loyalty and mutual respect. The friendship between Pakistan and China is one such extraordinary relationship, often described by the people of both countries as “higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the oceans, sweeter than honey and stronger than steel.” Even after 75 years, Pakistan-China relations continue to stand as one of the strongest examples of enduring friendship in global diplomacy.

In 2026, Pakistan and China are celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. To mark this historic occasion, both countries are organizing special ceremonies, cultural events and diplomatic gatherings. Pakistan has also issued a special commemorative 75-rupee coin through the State Bank of Pakistan, symbolizing the long-standing friendship and historic partnership between the two nations.

The People’s Republic of China was established on October 1, 1949, under the leadership of Mao Zedong. During the early Cold War era, many countries hesitated to recognize the new Chinese government. The Soviet Union was the first to officially recognize China, while Pakistan was among the earliest Muslim countries to establish diplomatic relations with Beijing. On May 21, 1951, Pakistan and China formally established diplomatic ties, laying the foundation for a relationship that would grow into a remarkable strategic partnership.

Pakistan-China relations are not limited to politics and diplomacy alone; they are deeply connected through geography, history and civilization. The mighty mountain ranges of the Karakoram, Himalayas and Pamirs physically connect the two nations. Through these mountains runs the famous Karakoram Highway, often called a symbol of Pakistan-China friendship. More than just a road, it represents sacrifice, cooperation and a shared vision for prosperity.

Similarly, the Great Wall of China stands as a symbol of Chinese civilization, resilience and national strength. In many ways, Pakistan-China friendship resembles a strong wall of trust that has withstood the tests of time, global political shifts and regional challenges.

The relationship gained further strength after the historic border agreement of 1963, which is still regarded as one of the most successful diplomatic settlements in modern history. China supported Pakistan diplomatically during the wars of 1965 and 1971, while Pakistan consistently supported China on international platforms.

Pakistan also played a historic role in global diplomacy in 1971 by facilitating secret communication between the United States and China. Through Pakistan, U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger made his secret visit to Beijing, paving the way for President Richard Nixon’s historic trip to China. This diplomatic breakthrough changed the course of international politics and enhanced Pakistan’s importance as a bridge between global powers.

Over the decades, defense cooperation between the two countries became increasingly strong. China assisted Pakistan in defense technology, military training and strategic cooperation. The JF-17 Thunder fighter aircraft remains one of the most significant examples of their joint defense partnership.

The relationship entered a new era in 2015 when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Pakistan and launched the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. CPEC transformed Pakistan’s infrastructure through highways, energy projects, industrial zones and the development of Gwadar Port. It opened new opportunities for economic growth and regional connectivity.

However, such a strong partnership has also faced attempts at sabotage. Over the years, various hostile elements and terrorist organizations tried to damage Pakistan-China relations, particularly after the launch of CPEC. Several terrorist attacks targeted Chinese engineers, workers and development projects in Pakistan. These attacks were widely viewed as deliberate attempts to undermine the growing strategic and economic partnership between the two countries.

Despite these tragic incidents, both Pakistan and China demonstrated remarkable trust and resilience. Pakistan established special security forces dedicated to protecting Chinese citizens and CPEC projects, while China continued to stand firmly with Pakistan and maintained confidence in the bilateral relationship. These challenges ultimately strengthened rather than weakened their partnership.

Although concerns occasionally emerged regarding security issues, economic pressures or delays in CPEC projects, such matters never evolved into lasting tensions or diplomatic hostility. Every challenge was addressed through dialogue, mutual understanding and strategic trust.

Pakistan has consistently supported the “One China Policy” and backed China on issues related to Taiwan, Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong. In return, China has repeatedly supported Pakistan’s position on Kashmir and acknowledged Pakistan’s security concerns at international forums, including the United Nations.

The two countries have also supported each other during times of natural disasters and crises. China provided major assistance to Pakistan during the 2005 earthquake, the floods of 2010 and 2022, and the COVID-19 pandemic through medical supplies, vaccines and humanitarian aid. Pakistan, in turn, always expressed solidarity with China during difficult times.

Today, Pakistan-China relations are entering a new phase of cooperation focused on technology, artificial intelligence, agriculture, green energy, digital economy and space research. CPEC 2.0 is expected to deepen economic integration and further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations.

The 75-year journey of Pakistan-China friendship proves that this relationship is not based on temporary political interests but on mutual trust, respect and shared aspirations. Time has tested this friendship repeatedly, yet every challenge only made it stronger.

In the end, one truth remains clear: every conspiracy failed, every obstacle was overcome, and the bond between Pakistan and China emerged stronger than ever before.

Long Live Pakistan-China Friendship.
