Strait of Hormuz Reopens: Global Oil & Trade Flow Restored After Weeks of Disruption

The Strait of Hormuz has officially reopened, bringing relief to global oil markets and international trade after weeks of tension and halted shipping activity.

Iranian official Ebrahim Azizi had earlier announced a strict new maritime regime, under which only authorized commercial vessels can pass through designated routes controlled by the IRGC Navy, along with mandatory toll payments.

The crisis began around 28 February 2026, with shipping activity severely disrupted in early March. After nearly 45 days of uncertainty, the vital route resumed operations on 17 April 2026.

This passage carries nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply, meaning over 150 countries were impacted during the disruption. Major exporters like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran faced direct pressure, while key importers such as China, India and Japan also felt the economic shock.

With the reopening, global oil supply chains are stabilizing, shipping routes are active again, and markets are beginning to recover after estimated losses of $50B–$200B+.

The world now watches closely as trade resumes under new rules, with lasting effects on energy prices and geopolitical stability.
