Pakistan Hails Iran–US Breakthrough as PM Sees Path to Lasting Peace

Shehbaz Sharif Says Historic MoU Could Lead to Comprehensive Agreement After 60 Days of Technical Talks

ISLAMABAD, June 23 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed confidence that the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States will pave the way for a long-term agreement, promoting peace, stability, and diplomatic engagement across the region and beyond.

Addressing the National Assembly on Tuesday, the Prime Minister described the development as a “historic moment” for Pakistan, highlighting the country’s role as a mediator in facilitating dialogue between Tehran and Washington.

“It is a historic moment that Pakistan signed the MoU as a mediator between Iran and the United States,” the Prime Minister told lawmakers.

Shehbaz Sharif informed the House that senior representatives from both countries participated in a High-Level Committee meeting held recently in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. He said Pakistan worked diligently alongside international partners to encourage dialogue and reconciliation, culminating in a joint framework for continued negotiations.

According to the Prime Minister, a ceasefire between Iran and the United States has now taken effect, while technical-level discussions are expected to continue over the next 60 days with the objective of reaching a comprehensive and lasting agreement.

Calling the achievement a significant diplomatic success, Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s role in helping secure the breakthrough had received widespread recognition in international media and diplomatic circles.

“The respect Pakistan has earned around the world through this achievement could not have been bought even by spending billions,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister also informed the National Assembly that Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to arrive in Islamabad later today for discussions aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening strategic ties between the two neighboring countries.

Observers view the Iran–US understanding and the subsequent Lake Lucerne process as a potentially transformative development for regional security, with Pakistan emerging as an active diplomatic facilitator in one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical disputes.
