In a first major move under the Mecca Joint Defence Pact, top officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey have landed in Tehran for direct talks with Iran to defuse regional tensions.
Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Turkey’s Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei. The discussions focus on de-escalation, dialogue, and building regionally-led security without outside interference. Topics include crises in Palestine, Lebanon and Yemen, with all sides stressing diplomatic solutions amid heightened tensions.
The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement was signed in August between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, declaring an attack on one as an attack on all. Iran was not a signatory. Pakistan proposed Tehran talks to ensure the pact does not turn into an anti-Iran alliance and to broker peace between Riyadh and Tehran, especially over Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and fears of a US strike on Iran.
